February 17-23, 2025.

I sincerely apologize for the changing plans all weekend... I'm glad this cold snap is passing, but I'm hopeful that it doesn't warm up as much as Environment Canada is saying that it will, for the end of the week. Please read the reminders below.

Reminders:

PLEASE WEAR WAPITI RACE TEAM JACKET FOR THESE EVENTS!

2NEXT FRIDAY: Athletes have no school on February 28th and we have a fundraiser!! We are looking for 6-9 athletes to help out with GP Public Teacher's wellness day- and need 2-3 athletes per time slot, to help out with teaching teachers how to ski! There are 3 time slots:

  1. 10-11:30
  2. 12-1:30
  3. 2-3:30

Please email/text coach Doris to fill your time slot. I would suggest 2 U16+ athletes + 1 U14-U10 athlete per slot, if possible please.

3. SUNDAY MARCH 2: We are taking the scouts out to teach them how to ski in thanks for letting us use their camp for the past three years for our ski team wind-up party. We will meet at the lodge for 12:30 and will be with them until 3:00pm. Please dress warmer than you usually do as there will be a lot of standing around and not moving as quickly as you usually do.

4. TEACHER'S CONVENTION: Thursday, March 6 in the afternoon fundraiser. This is going to be in town at Peace Wapiti Academy- PWA (behind the old Comp/Leisure Centre) from 12:30-3. This is a session for teachers to learn to ski and how to teach skiing - adding a little fun. It is only 1 session, and we will need athletes to sign up with Coach Doris- by texting or emailing her. We will pair older athletes with younger athletes and will have coaches as well.

5. TAWATINAW training camp: is now combined with the provincial camp which means we have grants that are being applied to the cost and the cost is now (all inclusive) $250/athlete. Which is way better than what I was getting and so please mark off your calendars for March 7-9. We will need drivers please as coaches are unable to drive athletes (coaches will travel in 1 car). This price i.ncludes food, accommodations, coaching, trail passes, and I'm hoping the loppet fees (I'm wainting on confirmation for this). It will be a great opportunity to enjoy skiing with others across the province in a beautiful place. Details to come still.

6. NATIONALS: With the last Alberta cup races being cancelled, I'm wondering if there may be more athletes interested in attending nationals? I am looking for interest of intent to attend from athletes for this event please via email or text by the end of this week to make sure I'm not making up our numbers for wax room requests etc. For nationals, one does NOT need to be in attendance for ALL of the races and registration closes MARCH 6th. Ages for athlets includes U16 and U18 and yes, U14 athletes can race up if they are interested in a fast and furious race, as Red Deer was cancelled and we've had a lot of illnesses this season, however the distances are a bit far on some days, so please pay attention to these! The races are as follows U16 & U18:

March 17: Skate Interval Starts; U16 5km; U18 10km.

March 18: Classic Sprints; 1km: U16 & U18 together

March 20: Mass Start Classic: U16 10km; U18 15km.

March 21: *Division Relay; Mixed genders + mixed techniques: U16/U18: 4x3km + BANQUET!

*Division relay means that Ivan will be making the teams up with the focus being on medals for Alberta. I'm not entirely sure of the process and am unsure if we will be able to put in requests for this event. However- what a LOT of fun this event will be!! 🥳

7. THE PHOTOGRAPHER Maj, has left us a link to go to her album for photos from our races. Please have a look and download what you would like. The highlights are web size and the print album are for prints. Maj Photography  PIN: 8029. Happy downloading! 📸

Tuesday: zone 1 classic skiing, no stopping, so bring water bottles with you and a headlamp (you will need one the last 15 minutes of practice- and this is our last week for needing one!🌞)

Thursday: Skate skiing- bring water bottles and let's enjoy those nicely waxed skis you guys have!!

Saturday: Judging by the temps- I'm guessing skate skiing. 😖 We will see if we can play with the jackrabbits after our warm-up and then get some distance skiing in.
